Drone Racing League wants to bring VR robot racing to the masses

A melding of the real and virtual worlds though FPV (first person view) piloting of little robots at a high rate of speed around an obstacle course, drone racing is like combining video gaming with formula 1 racing. Popping up around the world are groups setting up these courses in fields, stadiums, and other open areas both in and outdoors.

What is drone racing? Drone racing is a high speed competitive racing sport in which pilots fly quadcopter drones through three-dimensional courses at speeds up to 120mph, with pilots steering from the point of view of the drone by wearing First Person View (FPV) goggles that display a live image transmitted by a camera attached to the drone.

Drone Racing League

While there have been several organized events around the world, the Drone Racing League looks to take it to the next level this year (2016) with a six race schedule that will crown a world champion of their league. Watch their above promo video.  According to their website,  they are planing six races around the world for pilots to earn season points. The pilots with the most points will qualify for a World Championship race.  The first race of the season is in February at the NFL’s Sun Life stadium in Miami and the second race scheduled at the abandoned Hawthorne Plaza Shopping Center in Los Angeles.
