U.S. Drone Nationals takes drone racing to the next level

The 2016 U.S. National Drone Racing Championships (Drone Nationals) is positioned to move FPV drone racing to the next level in its ever increasing popularity as a sport.  Scheduled for August 5-7 in NYC on Governor’s Island, the pilots participating are the winners of qualifying events that are held across the U.S.  In turn the U.S. national championship is a qualifier event for the World Drone Racing Championships to be held later in the year.  Watch the above promo video for the event.

A key asset that is expected to help propel the sport into the mainstream is the new partnership that the International Drone Racing Association (IDRA) secured with ESPN for a multi-year international media distribution deal.   The first event showcased by ESPN will be the U.S. Drone Nationals … to be followed in October the 2016 World Drone Racing Championships (Drone Worlds).  The events are scheduled to be streamed live on ESPN3, followed by a one hour televised special on an ESPN network for each event.

The U.S. Drone Nationals contestants are those who qualified at local racing events held around the country earlier in the year.  In addition, other countries around the world are having similar qualifying events.  Winners from the U.S. Drone Nationals in categories Individual, freestyle, wing and others will be be selected to represent Team USA in the World Drone Racing Championships to be held later in the year in Hawaii.  Known as the Drone Worlds, pilots from over 30 countries around the world will be competing on four, world-class courses for $200K in total cash, prizes and trophies across multiple categories on both physical and online racing courses.
