Drone Footage of Roosevelt Island NYC Abandoned Hospital
Aerial footage from a DJI quadcopter as it takes in the ruins of the Roosevelt Island abandoned Smallpox Hospital. In addition to the hospital grounds and nearby park, the drone camera captures the NYC skyline across the river from the island.
As little bit about the hospital from Wikipedia:
The Smallpox Hospital is sometimes referred to as the Renwick Smallpox Hospital and later as the Maternity and Charity Hospital Training School. The structure is an abandoned hospital located on Roosevelt Island in Manhattan, New York City. The hospital originally had 100 beds when it opened in 1856. At that time the area was known as Blackwell’s Island.
At the time the smallpox vaccine was available, however, New York City still had large outbreaks of the smallpox disease, this was partly because of immigrants arriving in the city (country) that were infected. The hospital was located on the isolated southern tip of the island in an attempt to quarantine the patients.
100 years after opening the hospital closed, and eventually the building fell into disrepair. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 and designated a New York City Landmark four years later, the only ruin in the city with that designation. After the completion of an ongoing $4.5 million stabilization project, the Smallpox Hospital ruins will be open to the public.
According to the video publisher, a DJI Phantom 3 and Inspire 1 were used … an Inspire 1 can be seen flying from video taken by the other drone, the Phantom 3 I am guessing.
