The drone industry in Australia is starting to take off, with more groups hosting flying events more regularly. However, Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) regulations haven’t been updated to accommodate the new drone industry; allowing model aircraft only to fly in “line of sight” and allows outdoor flying only within a model flying club. Further, the current regulations limit the amount of useable frequencies for flying which really only allow for four people to be in the air at the same time.
The CASA has said that the commercial drone laws will be reviewed in the near future in order to address the increasing number of drones in Australia. It will also, look at recreational drone regulations. The current rules do not allow flying of drones higher than 400 feet, or flying over any crowded areas, or flying within 30 meters of people, or at night.
